Abstract

Forensic Entomology is the science of applying insect biology to forensic
investigation. It is a tool of great value in the investigation of criminal activity.
Forensic examination of entomological specimens encountered and their
development stage on corpses allows the forensic entomologists to estimate
the postmortem interval (PMI) and determine if the body was moved and even
if there is presence of drugs and poisons. Taking reference from classical and
recent studies this paper summarizes the methods used for postmortem
interval (PMI) estimation. By emphasizing on the need for proper evidence
recovery, we also showed the vitality of proper insect evidence collection. At
last, we also discussed the difficulties in balancing forensic entomology with
today’s research needs and suggest ways so as to combine basic research with
practical methods so that it is accepted and used more in the courts.
